Barrow Day #1 - July 4th!

We landed in Barrow, Alaska on July 4th, 2014! The airport looks exactly like the aiport from the movie "Big Miracle." Its really small. Baggage claim is even smaller. Alaska Airlines guarantees you luggage will arrive in 20 mins or less or you get $25 off your next ticket or 2,500 miles. We learned this fact very quickly because each of us earned miles. We were met at the airport by the Plant Manager. He called in reinforcements for our luggage. I felt that I had over packed for the trip. Nope! Someone packed 6 pallets worth of household goods. Wow!

We were taken to the Superintendent's house which has a lovely view. We learned that a parade was coming by the house. She gave our girls bags and we went outside to gather candy. Georgia and Abi got lots of candy! It was so much fun watching all the trucks full of people yelling, "Happy Fourth of July!"

We finished our brunch and was taken to our temporary home for the month. There is an amazing scientific study going on right now in Barrow. They are connecting global warming to other branches of science. If insects hatch too early because the weather is warmer, there won't be food for the birds that migrate north. Birds travel plans are dictated by the photoperiod. (sorry the scientists in my building are really fun to talk to! I'm invited to go out in the field and bag and tag birds!) We will be moving upstairs August 1st to a 3 bedroom 2 bath. The current apartment is larger than our Cincinnati apartment. We have a large stand up deep freeze and pantry area. The kitchen is small. The dining room and living room is combined and basic furniture is provided. We have 1 bathroom which we share nicely right now. Em has her own room which has 2 dressers (Abi and GA use one) and a full size bed. GA and Abi have twin beds which can be made into bunk beds. Our room has 2 dressers and a full size bed. Its nice to have a home without any clutter right now.

Sorry there are no pictures of the place because my USB cord won't transfer files. It will only charge my phone. There's more cords coming though!

We unpacked about 7 boxes worth of food, toys and misc stuff. Then we decided to go to the Dance Show at the Elementary School. If you know Toby and me, you know that we get anxiety if we are late for anything. We are always there 15 mins prior to any event. We learned not to do that. We were let into the building but had to wait an hour because games were still happening on the other side of town. A pick up game of basketball was started. Toby joined in and learned how fast high schoolers can be. The style of basketball is different than back home.

We watched about 30 mins of the dance before everyone was exhausted. We headed home to pass out!

So  it was close to 10pm and it was bright outside. We have blinds on the windows, but we use towels and blankets to make it darker. Everyone slept good that night but woke up  for drinks of water. The air is very dry and I'm thinking about buying a humidifier soon.

And that was the end of Day #1 in Barrow. I'll write more and add pics as soon as I get my cord. :)
