The Last of July

I am glad that we came to Barrow a bit early to get the girls settled into their new home. They have had a busy summer and they finally got to go to a circus camp. The camp visits several different states and countries. This is their 9th (?) year working with North Slope. They travel to the villages too!

Georgia was learning the trapeze.

She is getting so big!

And for the dismount...

The girls learned juggling, plate spinning, trapeze, silk, rope, tight rope, face painting and clowning.

Emily requested that I not take a picture of her while doing any of the activities. :) She is getting so big and has landed a part time babysitting job for the rest of the summer. She is growing up into a very responsible and respectful young lady.

It's now the end of July and I can say that I am loving it here in Barrow. I love walking out my door and seeing the ocean. I love the people that I have met. Everyone is so nice and helpful. We are trying to learn the language, Inupiaq. There are sounds that are difficult to make and there's sounds that aren't used. Its a slow process, but hey I learned Arabic and Japanese just by living in the foreign countries. I think we will be just fine.

The AC freezer went out yesterday and we stocked up big time! We loaded up on freezer meals for those times when we just don't want to cook. I was able to snag some Klondike bars before they melted. I was fortunate to get some frozen fruit and frozen juice. I have been craving oranges like crazy. They had oranges at the pot luck for the Disaster Camp. I could smell the rinds from across the room. It reminded me of years ago when I left Bahrain. I stepped off the plane and could smell the green trees.

Georgia has lost two teeth this month! She has a bunch of neighborhood girls that she plays with every day. The 24 hours of daylight mean that kids stay up and out later. I have been letting Georgia play outside with her pals until 9pm. Another mom explained to me that they need to play because in a few months, they won't be able to play outside. We are going to buy Georgia a bike when I sign my 2nd contract in April. She will be able to ride her bike with her pals between the plex-es (apartments). Don't worry traffic doesn't drive there. The neighbor girls have been building a club house behind our building. They have been using old pallets and scrap wood. Someone even added an old pot to the endevour.

Abi loves the library and its within walking distance from our house. She goes at least once a day to exchange books and pick out a new tv show to watch. She is still watching Dr. Who and we have made it a family affair. Every night we watch Dr. Who or an episode or two of the Simpson's. The Big Bang was getting to be inappropriate for little eyes to watch. I have been watching Homeland season 1. Its not a bad show, but the library doesn't have season 2. I have watched all the free True Blood episodes through my Amazon Prime account. Game of Thrones is a show I want to start watching, but the library is missing disc one and two. I am thinking about buying an episode just to make sure I like the series.

I have been slowly working on my new classroom. I've started writing my syllabi and working on my welcome ppt. I made a to do list to help me focus my brain on the important stuff. A past Principal and over all awesome mentor told me about prioritizing your to do list. It really makes a difference.

We should be moving into our permanent apartment in a few weeks. I will post pics of the permanent apartment when we do move. The building is nice because there's 8 apartments and everyone has kids that somewhat match our girls' ages. I've heard that the kids play in the hallways when its too cold to play outside. Works for me!

Enough of my ramblings. I need to finish up my list of food and items to buy in Anchorage. I'm thinking about doing freezer meals.

New Grocery Store

Today we went to the other side of town to check out Arctic Grocery. Its a long walk to the store so we won't be walking to it much. They had a different selection from the Arctic Coast Trading Post aka ACTP. The prices were better on a few things including onions. I bought a nice fat onion to chop up for my spaghetti sauce.

My StepDad, Larry would be happy to see these!

I love crackers and butter cookies in tins. I don't love 12.99 cookies that much!

LOL! Trash cans are decorated all over town. I had to take a picture of this one. Its the best one I've seen.

Circus Camp!

Circus Camp is in town! All three girls are attending this camp. I watched Georgia learn to tumble and juggle. Emily and Abi learned the tight rope, trapeeze and silk.

Emily and Abi are ready to go!

Georgia wanted to do it again.

My School Pics

Sorry it has taken me so long to get pics of my school and classroom. I took only a couple a week or so ago. Abi was wonderful in helping me to document the school and my classroom.

Barrow High School Whalers

And the Whalers picture

Band is huge here. There is no chorus for Emily. She will be doing Art or Yearbook as an elective. Abi has to change instruments. The extremely cold weather is hard on wooden instruments. She is thinking about playing the clarinet or alto sax.

Orange lockers brighten the school. The floors are a strange brick. I took my boots off and have walked on them. Not bad at all.

This is close to my classroom. I thought it was pretty.

Another shot of my classroom door.

The mural goes all the way up to the ceiling of the entrance way.

random toys in the window sill

I finally got my wish of having storage on the walls.

And a second door to my room.

cool windows reminds me of a green house

Trying to fix my desk and arrange everything in the room.

Fishing Trip

Today we went to the Point to do some fishing. The sun was bright and there was a little breeze from the east. I've listened to a few people around town talk about the east wind means good fishing on the point. Several people use nets to catch fish. We might do that next year, but now its time to rod and reel.

Abi is getting her line ready.

Georgia is thinking about fishing.

She  likes to fish and then play in the dirt. Then she fishes again.

Facing inland towards town.

I love this sun.

We found a jelly fish on shore.

Good bye jelly fish.

Toby

We left all our camping chairs back in Ohio or West Virginia. The ground works okay for now.

Georgia stopped fishing and started building a castle. She is worried that a dragon might move into her castle.

And the fog moved in.

And continued to come in.

Our neighbors started to disappear. We decided that the fog was getting too thick so we headed home. We had a great time even if we didn't catch anything this time. :)

7/26/2014 pic

This amazing picture was taken from my front porch on 7/26/2014 at 12:49am. That's right! I have been staying up watching Homeland season one for the past few nights. I stepped outside to this beautiful sight, the sun at its lowest altitude of the day.

Point Barrow

Today we drove out to Point Barrow which is just outside of town to see where everyone is fishing. Toby has his fishing and hunting license now and is anxiously waiting to go. We have to ask for permission to hunt on UIC land and caribou population is decreasing quickly. It appears that too many females are being killed during the season. We would like to get two caribou, one for the senior center or the elderly lady that we met at church and one for us.

Some people put out nets to fish and others use the rod and reel method. I don't know the limits on fish, but you can always look it up online.

Sorry about the pictures most of them are shot from inside the car because we couldn't stop. (There was a car behind us.)

Chukchi Sea

Cake Eater Road with a fence line. It helps with snow drifts.

College campus and more

Lots of vocational work goes on out here.

More pics of the Chukchi

The ice comes in and goes depending upon the wind.

The football field has the Chukchi on one side and the Beaufort Sea on the other side.

Its amazing that all this is here because of one woman in Florida. Google the story. It's beautiful.

It shows a better explanation for where the seas are located.

Fish camp/hunting camp

Pictures of the Beaufort Sea at the Point. This is amazing! What a wonderful world that we have been entrusted with to be stewards.

A little further down from the Point.

Not much out there, but our vehicle was not going to make it.

Zoomed out picture of it.

I can understand why sailors believed that if you sailed far enough you would fall off the Earth. Its so flat and you can see for miles.

The science teacher in me loves the clouds up here.

Chukchi on the way back to town.

The tundra headed towards the Gas Building.

It adds a bit of green into the picture.

Satellite picture by Google Maps. I used paint to show where I live and where I went.
